First Day at New School

Tuesday was Jada's first day of 1st grade, and yesterday was Aaron's first day at his new school, which is on the same campus as Jada's school and which is where Jada goes after school. So after I dropped off Jada at her school, I brought Aaron and his stuff to his new classroom. The teacher was running late but eventually arrived and gave both Aaron and me an orientation to the classroom. He was quiet, as I expected, although he did take an interest in the classroom's pet rats.

When I picked him up in the afternoon, he seemed fine; by that hour, several of the classes had dismissed to the playground, so he and Jada were both together. But soon after we left for home, he started whining. It turns out he didn't have much for lunch, perhaps due in part to the fact that he didn't know to ask his teacher to warm up his hamburger and his teacher didn't offer to. So between being hungry, tired from a full day of school, and overwhelmed by new faces and places, he was pretty worn down.

The whining continued up until dinner, and abated a little once he had some food in his system. But transitions are hard for the little guy, so I presume there will be more turbulence until he settles in to the new routines and new friendships. Soon enough, he'll be his friendly and loving self. But for now, we'll grin and bear it.
