Summer 2023 is proving to be an unusual one. For years, we back-loaded our vacation time to the very end, which usually involved hitting the beach either in Rehoboth or Ocean City. It was fun to have something to look forward to all summer, and being away from work the second half of August seemed easier to work around than any other time. So for many reasons it worked for us.
This year has been different. In early July I enjoyed three blissful nights at our place in Miami Beach and then almost immediately jetted off to Italy with Jada for a week. Vacation in early July is something we hadn't tried in 15+ years. It was strange, and honestly harder, to keep things going at work while away since this is actually a somewhat busy time of year for us.
Then, tomorrow we head to California for a quick trip to celebrate my dad's 80th birthday. We typically visit over the end-of-year holidays, or occasionally use that end-of-summer slot for the trip. I don't recall if we've ever done late July or early August. Should be fun and hoping to see friends while we're there who might otherwise be away on vacation or clogged up with their kids being in school.
In a post-COVID era, work can happen anywhere and enjoying travel is not taken for granted. I suspect the years to come will involve more changes to our travel routine. Bring it on!
