Rehoboth Beach has become a special place for our family, having been
the site for not one but two summer vacations. It's a cute town with
everything we need in a getaway, including beaches, carnival rides, ice
cream, and the local Y. So this past summer and three summers ago, it's
been where we've gone for a week or two and we've had a blast.
But
Amy and I had a sneaking suspicion it would be a fun place for just the
grown-ups too. So we took off last Friday morning after dropping Asher
off at preschool and barely two hours later were pulling up into a
familiar place, yet without three kids and tons of boxes and suitcases
in tow. How freeing!
It really was a great weekend.
We made a beeline for the hotel to park our car and then pick up rental
bikes for a leisurely ride through Cape Henlopen State Park to Lewes,
taking the Junction and Breakwater Trail on the way back. All told,
it's supposed to be about 15 miles but we probably pushed it to 18 miles
because we got lost a few times. It was so freeing to ride a bike, in
nature, with my wife, and without a care in the world. We stopped for a
bite in Lewes by the water, having worked up quite an appetite, and got
back to Rehoboth Beach just as our room was ready to be checked into.
It was fun to do the whole window shopping and boardwalk walking thing
with just the two of us; we got ice cream and play Skeeball to our
heart's content, with nary a guilty bone in our body that our kids
weren't with us to partake in the fun. We topped the evening off by
grabbing pizza and candy to go and heading back to the hotel room to
watch a movie and pig out. Good times!
Saturday I went
for an early morning run to Dewey Beach and back before getting
breakfast in the hotel. We headed to the outlet malls and had a round
of mini-golf in the morning before retiring to the hotel for a very long
and very necessary nap. (A possible boat tour leaving for Lewes -
which would've only been $5 per person - was nixed because I was too
non-committal to book in advance, and by the time I called the morning,
all the seats were filled.) We hit the Y after waking up and then went
for a stroll around town before ending up at a bar and grill for dinner
in a real, sit-down restaurant with adult conversation. How nice!
Alas,
the weekend eventually had to come to an end. We ended up walking
around a little bit after dinner before retiring to our room to watch TV
and then turn in. I grabbed a quick swim at the Y the next morning
before breakfast, and then we jetted home to be reunited with our kids.
We will surely be back, Rehoboth Beach, the only question being whether
next time is with or without Jada, Aaron, and Asher.
