I'm a bad Asian parent: my kids are 8 1/2 and 6 1/2 and neither of them has so much as sniffed a music lesson. Not that we don't value the lessons learned in learning an instrument - love for music, practice at practicing something, learning the fun that comes from getting good at something. We just haven't made room for this part of childhood yet.
That may change soon. Jada tested into being able to do a musical instrument at school, and I think she'll pick violin. Probably in the next year or so, we'll buy a piano and figure out where we can do lessons for both of the kids. They both seem warm to the idea, so hopefully they'll take to it and neither wonder why we didn't do this sooner nor wish they didn't have to do it at all. Stay tuned.
