Rounding First, Heading for Second

Well, first grade is in the books for Jada.  Her report card shows mostly A's, with a B in math and a C in writing.  Her reading level is still above average, although less above average than a couple of months ago.  She got high marks in all of the behavioral areas.  And she's delighted with the second grade teacher she's been assigned to.

Yes, about second grade.  It seems like it's going to be a big leap, academically, from first grade.  Jada brought home her summer books, homework assignments, and a list of supplies she needs to bring to school on the first day.  It all seems many steps up from what she's had to do before.

This seems appropriate.  My first real educational memories were from second grade, as any memories I had about kindergarten or first grade had to do with non-instructional matters like being the last person to know how to tie my shoes (kindergarten) or having our teacher pass away mid-year (also kindergarten; funny, now that I think about it, I don't remember anything about first grade).

But first day of school is many months away.  For her, it's summer time.  We'll let her enjoy it . . . a little.  Don't think I won't be interspersing with summer camp and pool parties some serious things like reading assignments and homework sheets.  And that C in writing will mean some essays will be due in the Huang household this summer.
