COVID stole at least one kids-free trip from Amy and me, a schedule long weekend in Chicago over Fourth of July. More ambitious travel will have to continue to wait, but we decided to do an overnighter last weekend and chose...our own neighborhood. We stayed at Inn at Penn (which we walked to!), and frequented such establishments as La Tao (hot pot), Loft (women's clothing), and Bieler's (donuts, yum!).
The highlight of our "trip," though, was a very long bike ride and hike to and through Fairmount Park. The halfway point of "the Loop," which I do by myself a couple of times a month, takes you close to the trail head to Forbidden Drive, so Amy and I pedaled our way there and then locked up our bikes and proceeded on foot. The weather was perfect, I reveled in the coolness and clean air of the tree-shaded path, and the sights and sounds of the Wissahickon Creek we walked along were so very refreshing. I felt like a cell phone getting recharged step by step.
The rest of our time was just laying low, walking around the Penn campus, window shopping, and picking up food along the way, just the way we like to spend our time when we're not worrying about jobs and kids. For the first time since the shutdown (besides Rehoboth), I slept in past 4:30am, and was still able to make time for a long morning run, a luxurious shower, and a leisurely breakfast before we checked out and walked home.
It was good to be home, although Asher being a handful snapped us quickly to the reality of our present lives. We will have to do this again, and hope for a day not too long in the future when we will be retired and able to enjoy days like this all the time.
